can someone in california write attorney costs off in their taxes for an adoption?

Sparkle21 asked:

I am in california. I ask because there is a tax credit that is given even for daycare/school costs for children so I thought there may be something for the benefit of a child through an adoption.

You don’t say what country you are from, so I’ll assume Canada.
Attorney costs can only be deducted if related to negotiating salaries and other forms of income. Adoption is not a form of income, so no, it is not eligible as a tax deduction.

Based upon your question, I will take the long leap and guess your from…………California?

Anyway, the answer to your question is regrettably “NO”

Attorney fees are deductable for a business in connection with a business activity and can be offset against income or capital gains when incurred to protect your asset rights or defend your asset rights.

Consider your costs the first small step in the parental costs for raising a child. Relax, children
only become more and more costly. And if you raise the kids right, your costs just increase along with your joy and pride.By the time you think you are just about done with your expenditures in your sixties, you will find yourself thinking and maybe wishing to move in with them and your grandchildren who you will want to spoil…..A vicious and delicious cycle.

    Congratulations on the adoption!
